Notable Box Office Stories:

  • While plenty predicted the latest film from Illumination The Secret Life of Pets would be a success few expected it to break $100 mil in opening. However that's exactly what the film did, breaking Inside Out's previous $90 mil record as the best domestic debut ever for an original animated film (also notable to mention Pets was made for more than half the budget of Inside Out with $75 mil). While obviously Illumination's strong marketing push helped, the film also had perfect timing coming in on the tail end of Finding Dory's success and finding zero competition from The BFG (which dropped 60%). Internationally the film has done okay with $42.6 mil but has many more territories left to go. The film received good reviews and an A- on Cinemascore so it should do well enough but two weeks of potential competition awaits. Two weeks from now is the release of Ice Age: Collision Course. Despite being a franchise almost 15 years old (raise your hand if you feel old knowing that) each installment has opened over $40 mil and the fifth entry could easily do the same. However the real interesting showdown will be next week. If Pets has the usual 50% drop that puts it right on point with Ghostbusters $40-$50 mil tracking. Sony has been pushing the film to children including a more child friendly trailer that has played before Dory and Pets. It remains to be seen who will win next week and the percentage of kids going to Ghostbusters could be the deciding factor.

  • While Finding Dory dropped two spaces (not shocking with Secret Life of Pets' performance) the film still managed to pull $20.6 mil at #3. The film has already passed $400 mil on Thursday and with this weekend it now surpassed Captain America: Civil War as the highest domestic grossing movie of 2016, earning what Civil War earned in half the time. Internationally the film still quite hasn't broken out earning a very good $220 mil so far. However it still has Mexico, Japan, UK, Italy, and Germany to open in so the $1 bil mark may not be out of reach quite yet, though it's seeming less and less likely. Still Dory stands as yet another example of Disney's incredible hold on the domestic market (it has earned over $2 billion domestic so far) and the powerful market force that is children's films. Notably Disney passed $5 bil in worldwide sales for this year, making it the fastest company to do so. It beat out previous record holder Universal who passed $5 bil by July 19th of last year. Disney seems on track to only having one serious flop this year (Alice Through the Looking Glass) as Pete's Dragon, Doctor Strange, Moana, and Rogue One all seem to be potential big earners for the studio.

  • On the comedy side Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates didn't set the world aflame but it did come in fairly over predictions opening at #4 with $16.6 mil. While certainly not to the heights of Effron and co's Neighbors films, the film managed to squeak out a decent audience in a very busy weekend. The film wasn't the best received critically and with a middling B Cinemascore don't expect this one to stay very long. With a slightly higher budget of $33 mil, Mike and Dave will need a better international push to profit but it should squeak it's way to a respectable $30 - $40 mil domestic run.
