Just came back from Dunkirk (no spoilers)...

First and foremost, I am a humongous Nolan fan. I remember sitting in the cinema as a ten year old after Batman Begins and trying to collect my jaw off the ground. He started my love affair with film and has been a direct inspiration with every subsequent release.

Tonight I saw Dunkirk, and I think it's safe to say he's done it again. I was sceptical though. I was convinced after the shaky reception of Interstellar the cracks would start to appear within his new films.

From the opening scenes this film grabs you and rarely lets go. Every moment is excruciatingly tense and some scenes leave your heart beating as you wonder what on earth could possibly be thrown at these characters next.

The cinematography is by far the best in any Nolan film so far. It is GORGEOUS. Some scenes look right out of a renaissance painting.

HOWEVER not everyone will like this movie. It's the most disjointed narrative that Nolan has produced, cutting frequently to almost entirely different subplots and scenes. You really need to pay attention here, otherwise the film can come off as extremely confusing in places.

As for the soundtrack? Hans Zimmer and Nolan is always a winning combination but here something felt...different. Zimmer takes a back seat in this film, despite it ironically being the most dialogue-light film in Nolan's filmography. Most tracks sound like very similar variations of themselves, meaning there isn't really a standout theme that you'll remember (I.e. "Time" from Inception). Ironically the soundtrack in the trailer is more memorable.

Overall this film is easily Nolan at his most REFINED, but it's up for debate whether it's Nolan at his best. Regardless, the hype, although enormous is entirely justified. Go see this movie.
