"The Last Samurai" (2003) Appreciation Thread
I saw this film originally when I was 12 or 13, shortly after its release, and at the time I thought the ninja fights and swordplay were cool but the slow parts bored me to tears.
On a whim I checked it out again recently after almost a decade and was utterly floored by how good I found it to be. It's an extremely emotionally resonant story and contains not only a standard great Cruise performance but something truly special from Ken Watanabe, which I was happy to find out he was nominated for at the Academies. Turned me on to Hiroyuki Sanada as well.
The definite standout for me had to be the soundtrack though, probably one of the most beautiful i've heard in any film. Between this and Blood Diamond, another exceptional endeavor from Edward Zwick, I'm definitely gonna be on the lookout for his future projects.
Hopefully the rest of ya'll have some thoughts on this one too.
