Gone with the Wind (1939) sold 202.1 million tickets during it's domestic theatrical run. In 1939 the population of the United States was only 130.9 million.

I looked up the age distribution of America in 1940 (nearest census from 1939) and 30.6% we're under 18 years old. So, if we remove those youngsters from the movie going audience we get the more accurate total poptential theater going audience of America in 1939 which is 90.84 million people. This means that Gone with the Wind sold enough tickets for Americans above the age of 18 to have seen it a little over two times EACH (2.22 specifically).

Whenever you think about the domestic box office giants like Avatar, The Avengers, Titanic and other top grossing films, remember that they are nothing in comparison to Gone with the Wind's numbers. If you adjust Gone with the Wind's ticket price to reflect inflation, it made, domestically, $1.85 BILLION where Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the current top) only made $936 MILLION domestically. They didn't have TV back then and going to the theater was much bigger than it is now with all our options.

Side Note: Gone with the Wind is 3 hours and 58 minutes long and people still went out in droves to see it. Imagine what it would take for that to happen again today.
