I see now why Battle Royale is considered a cult classic. It's amazing!
I just watched it for the first time and it completely exceeded my expectations, it was everything I hoped it would be and more. It has a level of campiness to it, too, that is great because it is the good kind of camp that is well directed and acted. One of the best movies I've seen in a while.
It's bloody, gritty, violent, and totally rated R making Hunger Games look like a trip to Weenie Hut Junior. The blatant rip-off that the author of the Hunger Games books (whatever her name is) did is almost as bad as Disney's The Lion King being a copy of Kimba The White Lion. Literally down to the names of the kids that died being named off on speakers while music plays... Unbelievable.
The movie looks so good visually, too. The directing and cinematography are fantastic, I don't know what it is, it just has this gritty, realistic feel to it that makes the movie so immersive.
It was disturbing, twisted, and heartbreaking. A true action adventure masterpiece, with great acting, compelling characters, just everything about it is superbly executed... pun intended.
I understand now why this film is considered a cult classic, why it's talked about and praised by so many, and why Quentin Tarantino said quote, "My favourite movie of all time." and "If there’s any movie that’s been made since I’ve been making movies that I wish I had made, it’s that one."
I should've seen this so much sooner, can't believe I'm this late to watching such a fantastic movie that I've seen talked about countless times over the years.
It's on Netflix right now, so anyone who hasn't seen it yet do yourself a favour and stop procrastinating, sit your ass down and have a good time.
Also, if anyone has recommendations for really good and gritty foreign action films similar to this, I'd appreciate it!
The trailer doesn't do it justice by any means, but for anyone interested here it is: https://youtu.be/N0p1t-dC7Ko
