How can Split and Unbreakable become a 3rd movie and still make reasonable sense?

I watched both movies and I’m at a loss how they can be considered to be in the same universe?

How can the connections between both movies create a 3rd movie?

I don’t want to come off as ignorant, but it feels like he just threw Bruce Willis in at the end because he could. But I feel like trying to connect the 2 movies with a plausible storyline is going to end in disaster.

What are your theories on how the two movies could be connected and have the basis for a decent movie?
