Notable Box Office Stories:
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - While maintaining it's hold on the top spot, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom did not really use it's wide open second weekend to the fullest dropping 59.5% to come in with $60M for the weekend. That's a pretty steep drop for the film especially in comparison with Jurassic World who's second weekend drop was 49% and that was coming off a record breaking weekend. In comparison Fallen Kingdom is down $140M from where Jurassic World was at this stage and now is looking like it could earn half of what Jurassic World earned domestically ($652M). Of course all of this comes with two major caveats. First off, Jurassic World was just a monster hit. At the time of the film closed Jurassic World was the biggest opening weekend of all time and the third biggest domestic hit of all time. So performing half of that domestically still means the film is in the top 5 of the year and on a budget of $170M which is far lower than say Solo which cost over $100M more. And the second and bigger caveat is the worldwide box office for this film is just humongous. While Fallen Kingdom still has a ways to go to reach that magic $1B worldwide that Jurassic World hit the film has currently grossed $667.6M worldwide, mostly lead by $237.1M run in China which this week surpassed the lifetime gross of Jurassic World in that country. The worldwide gross of Fallen Kingdom has now topped $900M and it should easily crack $1B by next weekend. It will be interesting to see if there's another steep drop next weekend with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp. MCU is often a box office killer to other franchises but Ant-Man is one of their lowest grossing films. However with the extreme residual heat of coming out so close to Infinity War this could cause a major boost in sales. Even if Jurassic World takes another major domestic hit there isn't much to worry about here. It's still a franchise that confidently scored $1B in just a few weeks so even if it's a downgrade it's still a massive hit.
- Sicario: Day of the Soldado - It seems just because a sequel feels unnecessary doesn't mean it truly is as the sequel to the 2015 critical darling opened this week to a pretty good #3 with $19M. After the original film followed a wave of critical praise to a pretty good $46.8M domestic haul, a sequel was quickly announced leaving many with confused thoughts. While a solid hit, Sicario wasn't such a big success that you'd think it would be the launching point of an entire franchise. Even more concerning was the departure of director Denis Villeneuve although screenwriter Taylor Sheridan stayed on. While the critical reaction was much more mixed for Day of the Soldado (I believe the 457th version of the title of this film) the film still rode in on a wave of excellent marketing and strong word of mouth praise from early screenings. This opening is $7M higher than Sicario's wide release opening and is playing in 400 more theaters than the first film. Both films carry a pretty solid budget of around $30M - $35M so if Sicario: Day of the Thanos can pass $50M domestic it'll be a pretty good sign of a solid franchise with good streaming potential. Sicario 3: Hyper-Sicario will probably be a guarantee at this point but don't expect the Sicario theme park ride any time soon.
- Uncle Drew - In the grand tradition of Space Jam of popular ad campaigns featuring basketball stars turned into full length films, Uncle Drew sure is also one as the film opened this week to a quite good #4 with $15.5M. Based on the Pepsi Max campaign of the same name starring Kyrie Irving the film features many basketball legends in old age makeup as well as Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery, both of whom are coming off major 2017 hits. The result was a pretty solid start for such a bizarre and openly corporate cash in product which receives surprisingly positive reviews and scored a fabulous A on Cinemascore. It seems a little odd that a tie in to a major ad campaign would be one of the more interesting films to potentially follow this summer but with 2018 already being so goddamn weird why not!
