Remember how Girl Interrupted was meant to be a Winona Ryder vehicle and instead it turned Angelina Jolie into a Academy Award winning star?

Poor Winona. At that time, her career was not going well, her former bestie Gwyneth Paltrow allegedly stole the role of Viola in Shakespeare in Love from her (which was a blessing. I mean, Winona would be convincing as a boy but period was never her forte. She was always too modern for this genre) so Girl Interrupted was going to be IT. A prestiged movie adaptation based in real life and Winona was going to play the author. What could go wrong?

Uh, giving the meaty role of Lisa to a rising star called Angelina Jolie who blew everyone away with her performance. And this was a cast of amazing actresses: Brittany Murphy, Elisabeth Moss, Clea Duvall, Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave...etc.

So Jolie won the Oscar, Ryder got to introduce the Oscars and some time later, she was caught shoplifting at Saks whereas Jolie was doing Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
