In The Cabin in the Woods (2011) The Chem Department is at fault for botching the ritual; just like in ‘98.
In ‘98 the ritual was botched by the chem department; Amy Acker’s character (from the chem department) says it was not their fault but is unable to point to a different department.
In the film, the chem department laces Marty’s marijuana with the intention of making him into the stereotypical fool. Unfortunately, the weed does not knock him out. Acker has no explanation.
After Marty saves Dana and enters the facility, the workers scramble to salvage the ritual. Acker rushes on and says, “Clean-Up says the prep team missed one of the kid’s stashes. Whatever he’s been smoking has immunizing him to all of our shit.” Clearly indicting a different department to blame. Why would the chem department not factor in the effects of smoking weed on “their shit” while lacing a subject’s weed? Very sloppy.
It’s also notable that Marty appears to be a nervous wreck the whole time and is surprised at his own ability to dismember a zombie with a trowel or shot a supernatural entity in the head while running (past the elevators etc). It appears the Chem Department lacing has given action hero reflexes and the situation is a bit worse than him just being “immunized”
(Also noteworthy is that Marty represent the Fool; in tarot the fool represents beginner’s luck.)
Edit:typo
