"THE ABYSS" (1989) is an absolute technical achievement. Incredible underwater cinematography and film making. Oh by the way, Ed Harris almost drowned.
I re-watched the movie recently and was just blown away by the sheer effort that went into this movie. You simply do not see movies made like this anymore.
Almost all of the scenes under water are REAL. They actually taught all of the cast and crew how to Scuba dive. The set was built inside a giant unfinished nuclear reactor tower and flooded with water.
Making a movie is difficult under the most ideal conditions, now take that and put it in a totally lethal under water environment. It's.. pure insanity. I cannot think of another director that could pull this off.
The movie itself is a little uneven, mainly I think due to the runtime they had to remove an entire sub plot, but it's a very enjoyable, very well made movie. But I believe It's worth watching just for the sheer technical achievements they managed to pull off.
If you've never seen it, go watch it now, then I strongly suggest watching the behind the scenes documentary "Under pressure: The Making of "THE ABYSS". It details the production, all the problems/challenges they had, and even talks about a moment where Ed Harris almost drowned due to an under water stunt going wrong. Again, it's insanity how they made this movie, would not fly today, which is such a shame.
