"The Chronicles of Riddick" (2005) has the best world building of any sci-fi movie ever
I loved "Pitch Black" for it's sparse, character focussed story, but “Chronicles” took the established persona of Riddick and thrust him into the phenomenally more interesting universe established in the next film.
Many sequels have expanded on the original, "Aliens" being my favorite example, but none have taken the original concept and expanded the universe in such a compelling and expansive way as “Chronicles”:
Who are the Necromongers? What is the Underverse? How did the Lord Marshall get his powers? What are the Quasi-dead? How does their ultimate gameplan end? There is so much to understand and learn about their religion and its effects on the universe.
I love watching this one and can return to it endlessly. I’m saddened by it’s critical and box office failure, and refuse to even discuss its followup “Riddick”.
I would love a return to this universe, and still wish there could be a resolution to the Necromonger/Furion storyline. What are your thoughts?
