The Empty Man is the maddest studio horror movie in a long time
Anyone else seen The Empty Man? One of the last 20th Century Fox movies (even has the old studio logo) and was dumped into theatres in the US in October last year. No marketing, nothing. It’s finally on VOD here in Europe. Never heard of it until now and took a random swing last night.
It’s a supernatural demon movie with a set-up not unlike Candyman or Slender Man or maybe Sinister - private detective searching for a missing girl and finds the weird legend of The Empty Man, and various teens summoning him to see what will happen.
The twist is that’s 137 MINUTES LONG and is really about the philosophy of manifestation, tulpas (kind of like in Twin Peaks?) and nihilism. Granted a good 20 mins of that is a very long but very cool prologue.
Written and directed by David Prior (who directed a bunch of behind the scenes docs for Zodiac, Panic Room and a lot of Fincher’s movies), it’s hard to follow towards the end and gets way too deep into the philosophy but I really dug how bold it gets. Unlike any studio horror I’ve ever seen. A cult movie in the making for sure.
Has anyone seen / can anyone actually explain the significance of the last act?
