Hot take: Vincent D'onofrio gave an Academy Award-worthy performance in Men in Black

I'm sure that title seems hyperbolic, but is it really? In a film full of solid performances (Tommy Lee Jones as the tired, grumpy old straight man and Will Smith as the cocksure rookie/audience surrogate), D'Onofrio had the most challenging role of all: playing an intergalactic insect inhabiting the skin of what was once a human being. It is a gonzo, full-body, balls-to-the-wall performance. The way he jerks his body around, staggering from one place to the next, twitching in inhuman ways, growling in that guttural voice, he made me BELIEVE he was a bug an in Eggar suit. In a career full of great supporting turns, Men in Black might be D'Onofrio's best.
