I really enjoy Tony Scott's "Enemy of the State" and I think it needs more love.
1998 film directed by Tony Scott, starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, and Regina King. And Lisa Bonet, Jack Black, Barry Pepper, Jason Lee, Jake Busey, Jamie Kennedy, Seth Green, Gabriel Byrne, and Scott Caan in smaller roles. This is actually one of Jack Black's first films and he is great in it. It was very successful financially and many critics liked it (although definitely not all) but I rarely see it talked about.
One of my favorite films is Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" which also starred Gene Hackman. I like to think of "Enemy of the State" as a continuation of his character, but in a film that is the exact opposite of "The Conversation." It's a loud, action-filled, testosterone-laden movie. But it's also really well paced (I think in terms of longer action movies, review this screenplay because there are very few lags and few act problems, surprisingly). The ending is spectacular, there is appropriate but not patronizing foreshadowing throughout the film, the chemistry between the actors is wonderful, the score is on point...this is a great action popcorn movie.
