The Menu discussion regarding Margot (spoilers if you haven’t see it)
Throughout the film, after learning that Margot is not the intended guest for Tyler, she is told that she is not supposed to be there tonight.
However, we only learn of one part of The Menu that is unscripted: Tyler’s Bullshit.
Margot chooses Chef’s side and is sent to run an errand for him. She then sidetracks to his cottage where a fight with Elsa ends in Elsa’s death and she discovers the newspaper clippings of Chef’s career and the short-wave radio to call the coastguard.
Margot was supposed to be there. Here is my reasoning:
- Margot is a sex worked whose born name is Erin. She enjoys her job, but we find out that one person in the guest-list has unnerved her and it’s not Tyler. Richard, the older man in a failing marriage seems to have forgotten his tryst with Margot just like he forgets the food he has eaten at Hawthorne, but Margot remembers what it felt like to sit in the room with him as he masturbated to the thought of her being like his daughter. This information is divulged to Chef.
Anne, Richard’s husband puts the pieces together during Taco Night and is later confirmed by Margot herself, even if all Margot says is that she “knows her husband”.
-
Elsa’s death was a punishment. Elsa was the tour guide who explained the rule to the guests, however she is the first to break it when Margot’s curiosity sent her there. Margot killing Elsa in self defense was plotted by Chef who allowed his most devoted protege one fleeting glimpse into his obsessive routine, one brief, deadly moment in the cottage. This leads me to the next action;
-
Chef needed Margot to use the radio. She didn’t betray him, she played out the exact scenario that he scripted for the night. The “coast guard” only arrived because Margot called. Margot was a pawn all along. Chef even confirms this by expressing that a menu only works if the whole kitchen works together.
I believe that even the burger was on chefs menu that night. Every word that Chef uttered was carefully contrived. It makes sense that the decor on his cottage walls were also strategically placed arrows to the exit. In fact, most restaurants of this caliber would not even consider stocking to-go boxes as the chefs usually do not want their guests experiencing their food in any other manner than the way they have contrived.
Margot was always supposed to be there and was they only one granted an exit from the island. She completes Chef’s story. He gets to experience one last truly happy customer enjoying his last happily made meal.
But I feel like nobody has addressed this plot point. I have searched for reviews that explain Margot’s “you aren’t supposed to be here” reactions from the staff. I only see articles explaining the ending.
Does my analysis make sense? Does anyone have any sources that agree or disagree with me? Can anyone jump in and tell me that I understood something wrong? I feel like I am so off base because I cannot find anyone talking about the coast guard bit.
