LA Confidential is a perfect film

Oscars be long damned. In any other year this movie would have been a clean sweep.

Let me explain.

LA Confidential, based off the James Ellroy novel of the same name, is an utterly incredible film. In an era where having one, let alone three well developed leads is a testament to its quality in of itself.

The setting (1950’s Los Angeles), characters and even violence (the film is surprisingly(and perhaps fittingly)) is mostly bloodless, and even the supporting characters, even the minor characters, all feel distinct and real.

With all that said, the real reason this movie succeeds is it’s three leads. Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), Bud White (Russell Crowe) and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey(I’m not going to go into Spaceys many crimes but I will concede he’s brilliant as Jack for as much of a cunt as he is)) drive the entire film in the best way possible: each has drive, but all are deeply flawed and broken. With this, they’re all still engaging which is why you learn to Care.

So yeah, LA Confidential is I’d wager the best crime thriller of the 20th century and one where I find no fault.

What are your thoughts?
