I always felt like he was the Hank Hill - from King of the Hill - just a good man who follows logic. And everyone around him is going insane (with obvious exceptions). His AND I GOT THAT KIDS BLOOD ON ME and his visceral reaction to it is so well done

I just like how the protagonist has to convince everyone and yet he fails to, and tries his best.
