Does John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) hold up well?

I am planning to watch this movie with my friends tonight, and we have no qualms with old moves, but I'm wondering what I should expect, since naturally, the movie is pretty old.

Do we have to put on our 80s glasses or does the movie hold up well?
