Warcraft tracking very well in China. Carrying Jurassic World and Fast 7 numbers.
These are confirmed pre-sales numbers (so far) for the midnight release in which Warcraft has already surpassed Civil War, more than doubles two top competitors for this and next week and is on its way to surpass Fast and Furious 7 which holds the record (and Warcraft still has three weeks to go, opens on June 8th):
-
Alice Through the Looking Glass: ¥15M opening day (not including ¥146K for the midnight screening)
-
X-Men: ¥85K opening day (not including ¥78K for the midnight screening)
-
Warcraft: ¥4.68M for the midnight screening, opening day numbers will be shown a later.
Will it have legs to do more than just good opening weekend numbers? We will see but it only needs to be a decent and fun movie. Embargo for reviews are lifted between 3/25 and 3/30, I have some press screening reactions here, they are what they are.
Why is it doing so well? Warcraft is expected to do really well in Europe and Asia, not just China; In Scandinavian countries, several midnight sessions are already full and I haven't heard anything on how well it is doing in South Korea which is Blizzard's biggest market. Blizzard games are huge in these markets, I remember in Portugal LAN cafes were exclusive Warcraft 3 and Counter Strike back in 2003 and this was before WoW. And, Duncan Jones and ILM brought legitimacy to the movie in the eyes of many fans.
Source. Looked for official numbers, couldn't find any in English.
