Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Finding Dory came in #1 again with a massive $73.3 mil topping all four of the weekend's new wide releases combined. That number makes it the eighth largest second weekend of all time and the best second weekend for any animated film. It seems pretty certain that Dory is on track to becoming one of the best earning animated films domestically. The film has passed $250 mil domestic and is already in the top 15 highest grossing animated films of all time. Internationally the film is performing well with $110 mil so far but hasn't sparked the interest that Dinsey's earlier film this year Zootopia did overseas and may keep it away from $1 bil. The big issue is China, where the film opened to a solid $17 mil but that's far under the #1 film in China this week, Warcraft with $24 mil in it's second week there. Still this is more good news for Disney and especially Pixar who didn't want a repeat of last year's The Good Dinosaur. Fun fact: Finding Dory has earned double the entire lifetime domestic gross as Good Dinosaur in just 10 days.

  • Seems sequelitis has reared back up as Independence Day: Resurgence didn't bomb but certainly didn't come close to the original film's monumental release 20 years ago. The film opened to about $41.5 mil at #2. Now those might note that the $41.5 mil opening is only slightly under the $50.2 mil opening for the original, but you have to remember how much the industry has changed since then. Back in 1994 the original dropped only 30% for it's second weekend whereas these days a film is much more likely to drop around 50%. So while the original earned over $300 domestic, Resurgence will probably only finish around $110 mil - $150 mil total, especially due to a lukewarm B rating on Cinemascore. In foreign gross the film is doing decently well, earning $100 mil so far but it seems unlikely the film will make more than $500 mil worldwide. While it has almost surpassed it's $160 mil budget, it's unlikely the film will justify it's existence or any future plans for more Independence Day movies.

  • Seems the public has been eagerly awaiting a well reviewed shark movie as the The Shallows well exceeded expectations opening to $17 mil at #4m while predictions had the film barely topping $10 mil. Columbia seemed to spend little on major marketing for the $15 mil budgeted film, focusing more on social media push which seems to have paid off and will likely push the film into profitability within the week. It's unclear if any more shark based horror will come of this but it's another good entry into the well reviewed low budget horror year that has brought up good to great success for films like 10 Cloverfield Lane and The VVitch.

  • After starring in one of the worst reviewed films ever to show at Cannes (Sea of Trees) and now the low opening of Free State of Jones it seems the McConaissance might be at an end. The film opened at #5 to just $7.7 mil. That's the worst wide release opening for the actor since 2006's We Are Marshall which mostly suffered opening in late December. The $50 mil film feels far more like an Oscar play film but with zero Oscar buzz and coming out in the summer season the film will likely not stay in theaters too long and definitely won't even come close to it's budget.
