2016 has been the year of disappointments
People had very high expectations for tent pole franchise films this year. And yet, many of those films have bombed either commercially or critically. I don't think there has ever been a year with so many disappointing franchise films.
X-Men Apocalypse was critically panned. The new Warcraft film franchise looks stillborn. Batman vs Superman was trashed by critics, The reviews trickling out of Rotten Tomatoes for Suicide Squad are looking terrible as well. Surprisingly, Jason Bourne is also looking like the worst film in the franchise despite Matt Damon's return.
Independence Day Resurgence, Alice Through the Looking Glass, & Legend of Tarzan were critically panned, and didn't set the box office on fire. Ghostbusters, BFG, & Star Trek Beyond were reviewed reasonably well, but still underperformed well below expectations at the box office. Star Trek in particular is lagging far behind its two predecessors.
Disney seems to be the only studio that has had success. Captain America Civil War, Deadpool, Jungle Book, Zootopia, and Finding Dory were critical and box office hits.
EDIT: Yes, I made a mistake attributing Deadpool to Disney.
