While the nine year return of Matt Damon to the role of Jason Bourne was not well received by critics, the power of Damon as Bourne still led to the second biggest opening for the franchise, opening at #1 with $60 mil. That's $22 mil more than the last Bourne film (The Bourne Legacy which starred Jeremy Renner in a parallel role) which opened to $38 mil. However Jason Bourne didn't come close to the massive $69 mil opening of 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, but that film had the advantage of some of the best reviews for a big budget film that decade and a promise to end the franchise. However perhaps the best comparison for the film would be to compare it to another fifth entry into an action franchise, namely last year's Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation which opened in the same time slot at around $55.5 mil with the same Cinemascore as Jason Bourne, an A-. If Bourne is going to perform like Rogue Nation then it has nothing to fear, as that film remained a steadfast late summer blockbuster that stayed in the top five for seven weeks, ultimately earning $195 mil domestic. However Rogue Nation did not face competition as tough as Bourne will face with Suicide Squad which is tracking to be the only August film ever to open above $100 mil. Bourne's fanbase will likely merge with Suicide Squad's so we could be seeing much bigger drops for the film than Rogue Nation had. With a $120 mil budget Jason Bourne doesn't need to worry too much, especially earning $50 mil internationally but it might not end up being the grand slam return to the franchise Damon and Greengrass had hoped.

While Star Trek Beyond seemed to be either A) a continuing success in a successful rebooted franchise or B) a return to form for fans, it seems the enthusiasm people have for the new film has not quite reached out to the general public as the film dropped a stunning 60% this week for a #2 weekend at $24 mil. The last two films dropped only 40% their second weekend and passed $140 mil by their second weekend while Beyond barely passed $100 mil domestic. With a significant $185 mil budget the film is having a hard time justifying it's cost and even harder time justifying the 4th rebooted film which has already been greenlit. To be fair Nu Trek has never been a big earner, mostly earning enough to justify costs then making money more on TV licensing and renewed merchandise interest. However this time the franchise just didn't inspire the love the first two got and it will be interesting to see if Paramont will have any interest going forward. Normally I'd say the new series, Star Trek: Discovery, would take precedence with these declining numbers but the producers of the Trek films have no affiliation with that new series and receive no stakes in it. Maybe Nu Trek 4 will manage with a smaller budget but with the series now being sold on action over sci-fi it's hard to see the makers shifting course so suddenly and reverting back to classic Star Trek cheapness.

While it didn't break the bank Bad Moms still managed to prove there is a market for R-rated female comedies coming in at #3 with $23.4 mil. The film's audience was 82% women which is within production company STX's hopes but certainly it would have been better if the film had broken out of $30 mil into something more exciting. However comedies tend to hold well, especially in the midst of blockbuster season. The film received an impressive A on Cinemascore so it's possible the film could hold as well as Bridesmaids which opened to $26 mil and ended up making $169 mil by the end of its run. While that kind of success doesn't seem likely this film will be interesting to watch, especially as comedies seem fairly stagnant right now in the box office.

Despite getting a head start on Wednesday, the cyber-thriller Nerve barely managed to make $15 mil for its five day haul including a #8 ranking at $9 mil for the weekend. With a budget of only $20 mil the film isn't exactly hurting but it's far below what Lionsgate expected. While Nerve has a Cinemascore of A- its super soft opening means it will be lucky to pass $30 mil when all is said and done.

This week saw the biggest release ever for the cinema event company Fathom which this week released the DC Animated comic book adaptation Batman: The Killing Joke on over 1,000 screens which netted the film $3.7 mil for a two night run. Despite the film being R-rated and released simultaneously on VOD, it still drew in a significant crowd which made it the highest grossing Fathom event ever. While the film received mix reviews, it marks the first foray for the generally well regarded and always well earning DC Animation division which has consistently turned out profitable direct adaptations of comics for years. It's hard to say though if this theatrical model will ever be tried again as this was one of the most famous Batman comics that many thought would never be made on screen.
