Examples of painfully obvious bad math in scifi movies
I was just re-watching Blade II, and early on, the character Asad starts quoting numbers about the spread of reapers (the enemy force of the plot):
"Nomak's been out for 72 hours. By our estimates, there are already a dozen reapers. There'll be hundreds before the week's up, thousands within a matter of months. Do the math."
Even without doing the math, that didn't sound right at all. Hundreds within the first week would mean lots of thousands by the end of the second weak. So I did the actual math. Depending on whether you do a compounded growth rate or a continuous growth rate, assuming all of the reapers are basically doing the same killing as Nomak on a 72-hour basis, it would take only 26 - 28 days to convert the entire world's population in 2002.
