What was the best film you saw this week? (08/29/16 - 09/04/16)
The way this works is that you post a review of the best film you saw last week. It doesn't have to be a new release, just any film you have seen over the last seven days that you feel is worth talking about. Here are some rules.
1. Check to see if your favourite film of last week has been posted already. If so, please reply to that comment instead of making a new thread.
2. Please post your favourite film of last week.
3. NO TV SHOWS! Discuss your love for Stranger Things somewhere else.
4. ALWAYS use spoiler tags. Report any comments that spoil recent / little-known films without using the spoiler tag.
5. Comments that only contain the title of the film will be removed!
Here are some examples of good comments from last week's thread:
- Children of Men - I've seen this one plenty of times, but my new roommate hadn't so I played it for him. An absolute masterpiece of a film, Clive Owen gives an amazing performance and the setpieces and cinematography are breathtaking. My favorite part is the climactic 20+ minute single shot that follows the main characters through a warzone. Great world building and soundtrack, unforgettable characters, definitely one of my favorite films of all time. If you haven't seen this film, drop what you are holding and get on that shit.
- Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping - The film only just released in the UK, and I decided to go to the first showing on opening day (I was one of four who went...and I took my girlfriend with me) a true shame IMO, but did provide me with one of my more enjoyable Cinema experiences. I enjoyed the movie, thought it was good. Not the usual type of movie I decide to see at the Cinema - but decided to anyway after already being so far behind the release in America after seeing the trailers and because I like Samberg. I thought the style and humour were excellent and well done, my only compliant would be I could've done with less of the other two members of Lonely Island. Edit: Probably too harsh - as to me they just were not as good Samberg or the rest of the cast in the Movie. But I also enjoy this in a way because it actually fits the plot of the movie well.
- the best movie I saw this week was definitely I Am Not a Serial Killer which jumped straight into my top 5 of 2016. This movie came out of nowhere and it's absolutely fantastic. It's kind of hard to describe it to people without spoiling anything because it's the kind of movie that's best watched without knowing anything. It's like early Gus Van Sant and David Gordon Green doing a horror movie and it also reminded me slightly of George Romero's Martin which is one of my favorite movies, I'd be surprised if that movie wasn't an influence on this. Despite all the namedropping I'm doing this movie is completely unique, unlike anything else you'll see this year. It's shot on 16mm film and it looks incredible, the style is very raw and gritty so for sure it might not be for everybody. I loved the small town atmosphere of it and it sort of made me miss the winter. I didn't realize the lead actor was the kid from Where The Wild Things are and he's damn good in this, dude is gonna be a star. Christopher Lloyd is also fantastic in this. anyway it's a great movie with very interesting characters & performances. if you like dark, weird drama/horror (i guess this could be put in the "mumblegore" category) you'll love this.
