In MIB, did agent J really pass his recruitment exam or did he just fail miserably?

Prior to joining the MIB, J is given a written and trial exam in order to see if he's good enough to join. Well he passes the recruitment exam but it seems to be more due to the recommendation of K. It's never exactly stated whether J actually passed the real purpose of the test or if he failed miserably and only passed because of K. Was he really supposed to shoot the girl and leave the aliens alone? It would make sense since he would have to learn to associate with alien life forms while trying to spot suspicious aliens trying to maybe pose as humans in disguise. Was that the intent of the exam?
