Casting high profile actors who can't disappear in a role is detrimental for a big budget film.
I just watched Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and wouldn't you know it has Samuel L. Jackson int it. But he is just Samuel L. Jackson in it. Not at any moment did I think who is this or Samuel L. Jackson is really good in this.
Same goes for Johnny Depp in most movies now a day. Oh it's Johnny Depp playing an absurd character again.
It takes you out of the movie, and twice as hard when the movie is fantasy. Suddenly this real world actor is in the fantasy world and the magic of the film is broken.
You can watch a movie with Garry Oldman and not know it. You can watch a movie with Samuel L. Jackson and you will always know it, but only accept it for certain movies.
It's a weak argument, I know, but some actors are so recognizable for certain roles, that they break the movie magic.
Matt Damon in The Martian is Watney, Matt Damon in Interstellar is, oh shit it is Matt Damon.
Thinking about my argument it is probably if a big character is introduced 3/4 ways of a movie, don't make it a big time actor or actress.
