I feel the three Back to the Future films are basically perfect when viewed as a whole.

This seems to be a really contentious topic, where some people view BTTF2 and/or BTTF3 as "inferior" or even "garbage". But I've never agreed. I think of the three films as three parts of a whole. I think each part has some weaknesses, but as a collective whole, they form a near-perfect film.

And the contentious genre shifts of the sequels help keep the story fresh. I am aware that some people apparently find the shift to a western story in BTTF3 extremely disagreeable, but that's their problem -- their personal prejudice, not the film's. Same goes for people who for some reason don't like the futuristic elements of BTTF2. I think treating them as separate movies is futile and divisive because they're best viewed as three acts of a single story. A story that goes from comedy to tragedy to something bittersweet and in between.

And because they're so well made, the three parts fit together perfectly. They're honestly one of the best examples of writing sequels that fit into the original narrative seamlessly. The foreshadowing and recurring motifs are absolutely incredible.
