Is a movie typically edited starting from the beginning and ending with the credits?

I find the whole process of editing both interesting and strenuous. Sometimes when I watch movies I imagine myself in the editing room, paying attention to the people with their eyes on the screens getting every little detail perfect.

I am interested in understanding how a movie is edited from start to finish. How many people are involved? What rules/processes are taken into consideration in order to make sure the whole movie flows right? Does the art of editing a movie change much from an independent movie to a full scale hollywood blockbuster? Do editors have full control over the placement of the score and the audio in general? How many people contribute in total?

I hope these questions stimulate some interesting discussions.
