[Serious] Jennifer Lawrence's complaint of getting paid less than her male coworkers in American Hustle doesn't seems to be a solid/good example of sexism that she makes out to be because her character is not that important and she appears very little.
I'm not one of those that are mad and screaming at her to shut up, "sexism doesn't exist," and "that's just the way it!" I acknowledge that Hollywood has some issues that are male oriented in a way that many actresses does not lead movies or paid less even if they work the same hours AND set aside due to their age after around 35+ while many men are not considered too old until they hit their 50.
I used Google to search and came to very speculative/guess by two people that was featured in Deadline and some others.
Basically this to people who are supposedly insiders basically said
- The three main male costars were paid $2.5 million and 9% back ends. Christian Bale worked on it for 45 days and Bradley Cooper worked on it for 46 days.
- She and Amy Adams were paid $1.25 million and 7% back ends. Amy Adams worked on it for 46 days and that Jennifer Lawrence worked on it for 19 days.
Now I can't justify who should have been paid more or less due to lack of information, but I just like to use those two speculations as a guide. I know this is a terrible way to go.
I have just finished watching the movie and I found out that Jennifer Lawrence's role is very limited and almost not needed. She didn't add much to the movie. Only positive thing I felt from her performance is that it reminded of her good acting from Silver Linings Playbook. I felt this way because she played a bipolar patient and she is kind bipolar in this.
Main Argument
She appears in total 10 scenes. At least three of them are less than a minute. In this case, I strongly believe and feel, she was paid less due to her work load compared to other actors. I think she is wrong to pinpoint to this movie to make a case for the industry to change against gender pay gap. That is why I agree with some people ridiculing her and criticizing her for picking this movie to make good argument. She worked less that is why she got paid less.
I feel that if Amy Adams is the one who did this I would totally agree with her! She and Christian Bale has most screening time. They probably worked the most. I am not saying more screen time equals more pay, but if Jennifer Lawrence appears that little she probably worked less. The movie made around $150.1 million with $40 million budget so she probably made as much money as Amy! Amy is the one that got shifted.(?) Jen was compensated very well for much less work. She actually got paid more than CB, AA, BC if work time and payment is ratioed
My math:
110/2 for revenue split w/ theaters = 55
7% of 55 = $3.85 million + 1.25 = maximum of $5.1 M
9% of 55 = $4.95 million + 2.5 = maximum $7.45 M
