A Cure For Wellness is destined for cult classic status
First of all I just want to get out of the way that I don't review movies so I'm going to do my best at explaining why this one is so great.
If you check RT or any other score aggregate sites, you'll see that A Cure For Wellness has pretty poor reviews, but in my opinion I think most critics and viewers missed the boat on this one. This is often the fate of cult classic movies where initially people don't understand them, but then the dedicated fans keep the film alive. Because I feel so passionate about this film, and I'm sure I'm not alone, I feel like this film will live on as a cult classic.
A Cure For Wellness is an incredibly unique film. This is the kind of creativity and innovation you only see in independent movies except this movie actually had a $40 million budget to fully realize its world. The sets they built for A Cure For Wellness are so cool looking that I'm honestly glad this film was long. The whole time watching, I kept wanting them to show more because the world they built is something you don't see in film too often. It really felt like they brought to life a very descriptive Lovecraft novel. There's just so much attention to detail in this film. The cinematography is also stunning and some of the best I've ever seen in the movie. There's also great uses of symbolism and foreshadowing which really adds to the complexity of the movie. I think this is actually a deep movie that will require a few viewings to fully notice everything. Even the director himself said that you'll probably need to see it 3 times. Overall, it's just such a beautiful movie even though it looks so damp and musty. I also have to commend this movie because it doesn't shy away from graphic scenes. Most movies would cut away from the things you see in A Cure For Wellness but instead Gore Verbinski sticks the camera right in front of the action to make you feel incredibly uncomfortable. I love it! This movie pushes boundaries in so many ways. The acting is also great and this has to be Dane DeHaan's most memorable performance since Chronicle.
I feel like there's so much more I can go on about but I want to open this up for discussion. I understand exactly why most viewers did not like this movie. It's different, it's weird and people get freaked out when their movies aren't formulaic and samey. That being said, for the people that did like this movie, I think it's safe to say that we REALLY liked this movie.
So what do you think? Is A Cure For Wellness destined to be a cult classic?
