/r/movies State of the Subreddit update! Lots of stuff coming up including The reddit Top 250 voting thread, Oscar Bingo, AMA's, and a new season of Fantasy Movie League! Here be information.

reddit Top 250

Every year we hold a vote on the top 250 movies of all time as voted on by /r/movies. How this will work:

  • Sometime in the next week we will post the voting thread. Already posted in that thread will be the top 100 from last year, the best picture nominees for this year, and some favorite picks by the mods because we are gluttons for punishment and mockery. These aren't pre-posted to try and steer the voting, they are posted by a shared movie mods account to soak up karma so people aren't blasting popular choices for karma.

  • Once the thread is made and posted you are free to post three movies that aren't already posted. Three per user, we will remove them if you post more than that.

  • The thread will be sorted by top. We've tried contest mode and it doesn't work because people just resubmit movies that have already been submitted because they don't want to look through the thread then votes get split. You can load as many submissions as you want and vote for as many of your favorites as you want.

  • Downvoting is discouraged but honestly there's not much we can do to stop you.

  • After several days of voting we will lock the thread and take it down. The votes will be counted and we will get the list made and posted. Here's last year's list. We know there's always a recency bias, that's why we do this every year. Fun to see which hot commodities drop off the list after a little time.

AMAs!

We have four awesome AMAs coming up next week. We will be updating the sidebar with the newly planned ones soon but here they are for convenience:

  • Tuesday, February 7 at 2:30pm CT we will be hosting the team behind THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL. Joining us will be producers Ant Timpson and Tim League (Alamo Drafthouse CEO/Founder) who produced the popular ABCs OF DEATH horror anthology series and Bill Clark, an executive at MicroVentures.

  • Wednesday February 8th at 1pm CT we will be hosting David Oyelowo for an AMA.

  • Wednesday February 8th at 1pm CT we will be hosting Benjamin Wallfisch who composed music for HIDDEN FIGURES and the new Gore Verbinski film A CURE FOR WELLNESS.

  • Speaking of Gore Verbinski, the man himself be here on February 14th for an AMA! More details on that coming soon.

Oscar Bingo!

Another year of Oscars, another year of Oscar Bingo! I am in utter disbelief that this is still going strong. I felt like it was such a stupid idea when I thought of it but here we are on the fourth annual Oscar Bingo! Last year something like 25,000 cards were generated and we had a ton of fun in the game thread during the Oscars. This has probably become my favorite part of the Oscars, if you haven't played before you should! Here's how it works:

  • About a week and a half before the Oscars I will post a thread asking for Bingo submissions. These will be for the Bingo squares and you will submit things that might actually happen at the Oscars.

  • After a couple of days of submitting and voting we will lock the thread, gather the most popular (plausible) submissions, and send them to our friends at print-bingo.com who will then send us back a random bingo card generator that gives you a unique card every time!

  • Download your card, print it out (or not, whatever), and join us during the Game Thread that will be posted around the same time the Official Oscar Discussions thread is posted. There we will be discussing the events and making rulings on which squares have happened and which haven't. First three people to get a Bingo and e-mail us (e-mail will be provided in game thread) with proper proof will win some stupid movies from my personal collection! So coveted.

So keep an eye out for that submission thread around the 15th of February!

Fantasy Movie League

We are closing in on the home stretch of Fantasy Movie League! Four weeks left in this season including the week that locks tomorrow. I'm seeing some new names in the top 10 which is exciting! A pivotal four weeks for them, not so much for me who has done fucking awful this season but hey I can't be amazing at everything. Remember, if you win I'll give you subreddit flair. How cool is that? Pretty cool, right?

If you don't know what Fantasy Movie League is now is a great time to make your account and play the last end of the season so that you're familiar with it when the new season starts! It's a simple but challenging game. Every week you have 1000 FML Bux to spend on currently playing movies to play in your theater. You can play the same movie more than once or leave screens blank. The players who collect the most box office intake (domestically speaking) within the given budget win the week, and your totals add up every week so being in the top 10 at the end of the season is quite a feat!

If you'd like to play just follow this link:

Make an account, and join the league. The password is reddit. It's free and a fun way to actually stay up to date on what's outdoing projections and what's failing miserably.

That's all I've got for now. Feel free to drop questions about any of the above or really anything /r/movies related. Or really anything. I don't really care. Boner out.
