Can we talk about Ursula in Sam Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, the landlord's daughter?
So I got around to watching the Spiderman movies again for the first time in a while. I watched them in order and just wanted to say how much I loved the character of Ursula and that I think the chocolate cake scene is the best scene in the trilogy.
It's just such a genuine moment for Peter Parker. Up to that point, life had been throwing him punches from everywhere. Mary Jane didn't really want anything to do with him, Harry was upset with him, he's losing his powers, Doc Oc is running amok, he can't hold a job, and he's failing school. He asks,"Am I not supposed to have what I want?"
And then in comes Ursula. When Perter desperately needed her. She does something so simple: offers him some cake. It's such a great scene because this is the first time in the film where someone does something nice for him for no reason other than they wanted to do something nice. No motives or agenda. Just a genuine, honest moment. The warm smile that comes across his face is so pure.
When nothing was going his way, she does the one thing no one else had. Be nice, charitable, and genuine. Peter has spent the whole movie trying everything to please everyone he cares about and be Spiderman at the cost of his own happiness with nothing in return, and someone finally does something for him. And it means the world to him.
It's just a really nice, quiet, genuine moment that I really loved.
And it was nice to see her pop up briefly in 3. And based on how poorly they handled MJ's character, I would've much rather seen him in a relationship with Ursula. I just thought the way she adored him like a school crush was adorable.
Anyway, wanted to talk about it because no one does.
