Why isn't "number of tickets sold" a metric for box office success?

Wouldn't this be a more appropriate historical measure of box office success? It negates the impact of inflation and ignores other high-priced ticket variants like 3D. I understand it's all about the benjamins at the end of the day, but wouldn't this metric make sense at least in conjunction with overall revenue?
