Notable Box Office Stories:

  • In all things domestic The Fate of the Furious is performing exactly like every non-Furious 7 film in franchise. Currently the film is performing just slightly worse than Fast & Furious 6 which had already passed $200M by this point in its domestic run while FotF is still under that number. This weekend was another solid one, a 50% drop for a third weekend at #1 with $19.3M, a decent haul but really only maintained that #1 spot because of lack of serious competition (that will be next week). That is why the fact the franchise has passed $1B as of this week is so damn incredible. The film is now the 21st highest grossing film of all time worldwide yet only the 190th highest grossing film domestically. To understand just how insane that split is, take a look at the now #22 spot, Rogue One. Rogue One has a very even split of 50/50 domestic and international, earning $532M domestic and $523M international. In comparison, Fate of the Furious has made $340M less domestically than Rogue One yet still beats it in overall numbers. It seems the film is going to likely end up with less than 20% of its total gross in US sales. The film has already passed Furious 7's Chinese take, earning $350M so far with a lot more room to keep expanding. This is film will likely become only the 5th film ever to make over $1B in international sales alone (Furious 7 is one of those 4 existing films by the way). Quite simply with Rogue One underperforming overseas, MCU films never breaking $1B internationally (FotF is just $30M away from the lifetime international take of The Avengers), and since we are still waiting to see if the sequels will be as successful as the originals for Jurassic World and Avatar it's safe to say Fast & Furious is the most important international franchise around right now. Yes, it's more important to the international market than Star Wars, Marvel, Jurassic Park, and Avatar. Hell of a thing for a multiracial cast in a franchise that's now a decade and a half old. It should also be noted that this week FotF passed the domestic gross of Get Out which means once again F. Gary Gray has the highest grossing film ever for a black director (domestic and worldwide).

  • This week saw two very interesting surprises in smaller releases. While Baahubali 2 had a better per theater average How to Be a Latin Lover beat it coming in at #2 with $12M in only 1,100 theaters. That's pretty damn impressive considering it outgrossed a Emma Watson/Tom Hanks film that was in 2,000 more theaters than the film. This film and Baahubali 2 represent a clear growing market share in the US marketplace for specific cultural properties. As the title suggest this is a film intended for the Spanish market by the increasingly important branch of Lionsgate, Pantelion, which has produced hits like Spare Parts and Instructions Not Included. The film is clearly a bigger play than before including hiring Ken Marino to direct and Instructions Not Included star Eugenio Derbez to star and that cross-pollination of Latin stars and Hollywood direction has paid off. The film is vastly outperforming in its limited sphere and earned an impressive A on Cinemascore, so don't be surprised if this gets a significant expansion in the weeks to come.

  • While China's most expensive movie of all time (The Great Wall) didn't exactly play like a blockbuster, India's most expensive movie of all time Baahubali 2: The Conclusion managed to seriously defy the odds coming in at #3 with $10.1M despite being in only 450 theaters, which gives it a per theater average of $23,855. That means it is the 3rd highest grossing foreign language opening ever, just behind the Jet Li films Hero ($18M) and Fearless ($10.5M), and those films were released in over 1,500 theaters for their opening weekends. In fact the last time a film was released in less than 1,000 theaters and managed to crack the top 5 was in 2015 when Everest managed the feat with $7.2M in 545 theaters, but that was in more theaters and was exclusively shown in IMAX which inflated the ticket numbers immensely. Safe to say this is one of the biggest small releases ever, and the biggest foreign limited releases of all time. Hell it's passed the lifetime domestic gross of Baahubali: The Beginning in just one weekend, showing just how important this film is to the Indian culture in the US. Bollywood has been growing steadily in importance here in the US but usually the films round out the bottom of the top ten at best. While Baahubali 2 and Latin Lover are in less theaters combined than The Circle, they collectively earned $13M more than The Circle. This weekend is clearly showing that specific cultural markets in the US are extremely important right now and are only growing with each year. Baahubali 2 may be a blip on the radar but something tells me this is only beginning of a growing interest in Bollywood cinema in the US.

  • I think it's safe to say I don't think I've seen a more unanimously loathed film in a while than The Circle. The film not only received a terrible 17% on RottenTomatoes it also received a horrendous D+ on Cinemascore. Still the star power of the film seemed enough to at least bring in some money, opening at #4 with $9.3M. The film starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks tried to use current technologic fears to garner interest but what little there was hostile to say the least. The opening isn't terrible for the film which was made for a pretty low $18M but with a Cinemascore that bad and the megahit Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the horizon the film could easily not pass its budget. It's always a fascinating moment when a film with this much talent in front of and behind the screen becomes a jumbled mess. At very least it shows that the A-list days are clearly over when an actress can't score in the top 3 when her last film, which is still in theaters, made $1B.

  • While Blumhouse Tilt is still looking for it's big hit, it's still a solid little machine as Sleight opened at #14 to $1.6M. Sounds terrible except the film was only in 545 theaters and only cost $250K to make. As mentioned before BH Tilt is more of a VOD platform anyways, using theatrical releases to drum up interest then quickly releasing the film on VOD which this should do well enough.

  • Before it likely dominates the box office next week Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has opened overseas to a very respectable $101.2M overseas, mostly lead by the UK, Australia, and Germany. The film is tracking well over the original Guardians which was a surprise hit at the time. With any opening this strong without China, Japan, or South Korea it's looking like Guardians could become Marvel's biggest non-RDJ starring franchise.
