Certainly Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had some prime real estate to work with as Fate of the Furious slowly held onto #1 and it opened against zero major competition. Still it's pretty damn impressive just how well Guardians 2 did, as it opened to $145M at #1. That's a 53% increase from Guardians 1, which similarly opened against no major competition but this time in early August where it opened to $94.3M. This marks the biggest single jump from an original film to it's sequel for any MCU film and the second biggest jump in between sequels behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Captain America: Civil War, the latter of which benefited from basically being Avengers 2.5. The biggest boon for Guardians is that the original was a surprise hit that relied on great word of mouth. Because of that the film ended with a fabulous 3.5x multiplier, so if Guardians 2 has the same multiplier that means it will pass $400M domestically. The legs of this film will therefore be very interesting to watch as like the last outing this film scored an excellent A rating on Cinemascore. Also the next two weekends, while not as uneventful as the post Fate of the Furious slate, certainly aren't the earth shakers that are coming later so Guardians 2 has a lot of room to breathe. However there's still enough franchise stuff out there that the film can't just coast on a month as empty as August can be. Internationally the film added another $123.8M, mostly led by China where the film opened more than 75% better than Guardians 1, earning $48M in the country. A big boom to the international sales was 3D, where Box Office Mojo is reporting that an insane 99% of Chinese showings are in 3D with several other countries having over 80% of showings in the exclusive format. However as noted this isn't quite the massive success that Fate of the Furious has been overseas and the popularity of that film might still cut into their profits. Ultimately though Guardians has proven that Marvel did well putting its trust in James Gunn and giving him more freedom over his universe than other directors, something that is massively paying off with this film.

No real major new releases this week so I figured I'd devote a little extra time to two notable milestones today. First up is Get Out which passed $200M worldwide this week, mostly thanks to a recent domestic push and the film opening in Germany. The horror/thriller directed by Jordan Peele notably cost only $4.5M to make and due to Blumhouse's low budget/high back-end deals Peele is probably going to be getting a very significant check for the profits and the residuals. Notably this milestone comes right as Peele got an exclusive first look deal with Universal (who distributed Get Out) for a film that could cost in the $30M - $50M range. In just one film Peele has become a major player in the Hollywood game and Get Out passing $200M worldwide has proven that he can take a seemingly unmarketable subject matter and make a major hit out of it. It will be interesting to see if Jordan will thrive or be buried under expectations but at the very least Hollywood will be incredibly eager to see what he does next.

The Indian epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion passed a major milestone in India cinema became the first film ever from the country to make Rs 1,000 crore worldwide. For those who don't know 1,000 crore is 10 billion rupees which is currently equivalent to around $146M USD. However while certainly these numbers seem accurate, India has never been great at releasing the full international figures of their films so we can only make estimations of just how much overall the film has made. What we can note is the film is still doing decently in the US but dropped significantly. The film stayed in the same amount of theaters but dropped 69% this weekend, seemingly showing most people in the country willing to pay the premium price to see the film have already. Still the international and homegrown success of Baahubali 2 has proven there's a significant industry in India that may finally be finding the crossover appeal it's been seeking for decades.
