Just finished watching every movie included in the book '1001 movies you must see before you die'
I have finally finished watching all of the movies from the book called '1001 movies you must see before you die'.
I began this 'challenge' in late May of 2015 inspired by another post on this subreddit. Since then I have seen 723 movies from the book as I chose not to watch movies a had already seen. I did keep notes on some milestones and I found that during 2016, I watched 549 movies from the book.
Some of the movies were really hard to find. There is a page on the 1001films wikia that presents general tips on how to find rare films. Not living in the US, streaming services was not an option for finding the majority of the films. The streaming services from where I live have a very limited selection of movies. The main sources for watching movies for me was to buy physical copies, record them from TV, see them on the big screen (my local cinematheque) or stream them from youtube or vimeo.
I would say that overall, this was a great list of movies with great variety and I saw many movies that I would otherwise not see. I am now looking for a new list of movies to continue my film watching adventures. My first thought is to watch all movies included in the Criterion Collection. Any recommendations on lists, movies, directors, books or other movie related stuff are welcomed.
edit:
Instead of listing my favourite movies, I will try to make a list of, what I would consider, the top 10 'underappreciated' movies. Otherwise I would include some obvious movies from Kurosawa, Welles, Lynch etc. So here goes:
- Los Olvidados (1950) - Luis Buñuel
- Tampopo (1985) - Juzo Itami
- Woman in the Dunes (1964) - Hiroshi Teshigahara
- The Ascent (1977) - Larisa Shepitko
- Marketa Lazarová (1967) - František Vláčil
- Come and See (1985) - Elen Klimov
- Yi Yi (2000) - Edward Yang
- L'Atalante (1934) - Jean Vigo
- Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) - Robert Hamer
- Onibaba (1964) - Kaneto Shindo
