Baby Driver and hearing loss - did it affect anyone else?
I feel like I had a really singular reaction to this movie and wonder if anyone else felt the same way.
A year ago I started losing the hearing in my right ear. I assumed it was due to a cold/flu as I was also really dizzy and tired. Nope, it was a tumour growing on my auditory/balance nerve. I was told it was life or death that I get it removed because it was pressing on my brain stem.
I was resigned to undergoing brain surgery, but the issue that struck me hardest: I'd lose my hearing on that side and would probably get tinnitus as a result of the surgery.
Music is my life: I met my husband on last fm. Our wedding rings have lyrics from our favourite artists on them. Music is how I relate to the world and brings me more joy than anything. I had to wait two months for the surgery, knowing I'd never hear my favourite songs in stereo again afterwards. The night before the operation, I played my favourite album with a glass of wine and cried.
Baby Driver's tinnitus issues really spoke to me, but also (SPOILER) his love of music and the grief of having hearing loss take that away. I ended up getting tinnitus that responds to sound, so music now is unpleasant and painful to listen to. Only one working ear also makes music nowhere near as emotional and all-encompassing. I felt like this movie really displayed the grief I've been trying to work through, losing this part of myself through hearing loss.
I'd love to hear (heh) if anyone else's experiences with it!
