This Is England (2007). A non-racist skinhead crew takes in a young boy who's being picked on at school. Everything is going grand until their former leader returns from prison with newfound white supremacist politics.

I think this film is much better than American History X in showing how racism and hate can hurt and divide people. And many people in this sub may have never seen it.

It also shows a side of Skinhead culture that many people don't know about. With Jamaican roots, and originally non-political/non-racist, many fascist groups adopted the style and the scene was targeted by for recruitment because of its working class bent and hooliganism.

Most skinheads just wanted to drink beer, listen to ska and reggae, get into scraps and wear Fred Perry's, just like Woody and Milky (who is Jamaican-British) in this film. And that's what they do until their former leader Combo comes back with a message of hate and division that spirals into tragedy.

I don't think I could possibly recommend this film enough. The message it portrays, of the seduction and dangers of fascism is harsh but intensely realistic. The performances by Joe Gilgun as Woody and Andrew Shim as Milky are mesmerizing, Stephen Graham as Combo is terrifying, and 12-year old Thomas Turgoose as Shaun, a poor working class kid who is lost after losing his father is extraordinary.

If you haven't seen this film, watch it as soon as you can. You won't regret it.
