"Total Recall" (1990) is one of those sci-fi action movies that you never get tired of watching. No one made better satirical sci-fi movies than Paul Verhoeven
"Total Recall", "Robocop" and "Starship Troopers" are sci-fi action movies that play within the genre, are entertaining and thrilling but they're also movies that use satire to discuss social commentary. As violent as these movies are, one becomes quickly aware Verhoeven isn't so much as wallowing on the blood and guts and shootings but he's clearly mocking these archetypes by going as over the top as he can. The humor is subtle but it is there.
Out of all these movies, "Total Recall" is my favorite. Arnold Schwarzenegger is very good as the every-man who realizes his entire life might be a lie and realizes he might be a spy or is he? What I enjoy is that we might either be seeing a straightforward story or we might be fooled by it being part of the game Douglas Quaid has bought himself into.
The special effects are superb and amazing for its time, the scenes set in Mars are great, the supporting cast is solid: Michael Ironside is terrific as usual and I love how he doesn't play his villanous character as a one-dimensional baddie, Sharon Stone does the ice cold femme-fatale to perfection while handling a butcher knife and Rachel Ticotin has the elements you'd expect in a James Cameron heroine: strong, brave, bold and is far from being your average damsel in distress. She's not just a romantic interest, she's the hero's partner in action.
