How was the movie “The Void” (2016) made with only $82,000?

I’m honestly baffled that this movie cost so little to make, it doesn’t make any sense to me. The amount of effects in this movie seems like something you’d see in a big blockbuster horror film, with the creature designs being elaborate and large (mainly talking about the daughter monster). Then on top of that the movie is shot really well and feels more polished than other low budget horror films. Does it just show the level of talent of the people involved in making it? Would it have to do with a lot of volunteers working on it?

edit: since this is on the front page now I urge anyone who hasn’t seen it to go watch it on Netflix soon. it’s a wild ride. it’s not going to be how you expect, and it gets more and more insane as it goes. it could almost be considered an Event Horizon spiritual successor. and if you like John Carpenter movies then this will be awesome
