[TRIVIA] In “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, all of the pink Mendl’s boxes were altered in postproduction because the graphic designer misspelled a word.
I was listening to the episode Hero Props: Graphic Design in Film & Television from 99% Invisible this morning because I do similar work, but with interpretive exhibits. The graphic designer, Annie Atkins, revealed that she had inadvertently spelled ‘patisserie’ with two t’s. Each of the boxes that had been shot up to that point had to be fixed in post.
If you are prop collector, boxes with the misspelling are the authentic item used in production, and others are fakes.
I thought that was an interesting piece of trivia, not only for graphic designers, but for fans of Wes Anderson movies as well.
Here is an another interview with Atkins with details about her other graphic work on that movie.
