Jumanji to become Sony's highest US Box Office performer outside of Spiderman franchise
Shouldn't this be discussed more on r/movies? It's almost bizarre how there's not more discussion that the new Jumanji is on pace to surpass everything else Sony has ever released in the US (with the lone exception of their Spiderman franchise).
It's also amazing how low Sony's original expectations were for Jumanji (Sony expected it to open at $45 million over 6 days), but it came in over $70 million in its first 6 days and has posted some of the most incredible holds we'll ever see.
Now, it's posting a $36 million 3rd weekend (down only 27%) and should surpass $250 million before next weekend.
It's now on pace to get past Skyfall's $304 million in the next 3 weeks to become Sony's highest non-Spiderman movie in the US/Canada. It even has a chance to surpass Spiderman: Homecoming's $334 million take in the US. That's perhaps the most stunning way to consider Jumanji's box office performance.
Not bad for a franchise reboot modestly budgeted at $100 million. This should be a lesson to everyone (including Sony) for how to manage a franchise reboot.
And that it's doing this type of business in the shadow of Star Wars: TLJ just makes it all the more incredible. This shows how to properly counterprogram a franchise blockbuster like Star Wars. It can be done.
