M Night Shyamalan has unofficially referred to Unbreakable and Split as being a part of his "Eastrail 177 Trilogy". Glass will conclude this narrative.
The Eastrail 177 Trilogy (though Shyamalan indicates it is possible there may eventually be more than three in the series) includes three films, all superhero themed movies, though with a thriller/horror/mystery component to them. One of the connecting factors is that they all feature the character David Dunn. Each of the three main characters, David Dunn, Mr. Glass and "The Horde" (the term used to describe a series of split personalities acquired by Kevin Crumb) have a connection to the Eastrail 177 Train Disaster featured in the first movie, Unbreakable. Unbreakable was followed by Split, with the trilogy culminating with Glass, planned for 2019. The series has been noted for its differences to more traditional superhero movies, with Shyamalan's work referred to as "the first auteur shared superhero universe". It is the first superhero franchise that is written and directed by one person giving Shyamalan full control over the process, in comparison to other popular films in the genre. M. Night has noted that while it is a comic book series, and refers to comic books, it is not actually derived from comic book material itself. The filmmaker has stated that the films are origin stories, of people with unique gifts, with the intent being to acknowledge that every person has something special about them. Split is the first film that is classified as a supervillain origin story.
