Understanding the Japanese New Wave

Recently I've become interested in the topic of the Japanese New Wave movement. I've done research and watched videos about it so I understand the context and history behind it. However, I'm having trouble pinpointing what characteristics make a Japanese new wave film fit into that category. Is there anything about the aesthetic, editing, lighting, color or story that makes a film fall under the category of Japanese New Wave movement?
