What film would be held in better regard if it weren't for it's sequels?

I was thinking about Shrek, which has obviously spawned an extremely successful franchise of 5 films and counting. However, I feel like the recent sub par quality of the series has diminished the significance of the first film as an animated classic. The first Shrek subverted tropes and started a mainstream trend in pop culture animated films that broke the fourth wall. I feel like this trend could apply to other films as well.

That's just one example, and it entirely depends on your opinion of Shrek, but what other films would be held in higher regard were in not for their continuations?
