Box Office Week: Black Panther easily wins its second week adding $104M, breaking through $700m globally. Game Night does solid $17M. Meanwhile, Annihilation underwhelms at $11M.

Notable Box Office Stories:

Black Panther: There was no doubt that the Marvel superhero would conquer the B.O. for the second weekend; the only question was by how much. It’s only the 4th movie ever to score a second weekend with over $100M. The $111M for the weekend makes it the second highest second weekend ever, only trailing The Force Awakens’ $149M. It also pushes the movie over $400M domestically, third fastest to that mark behind only TFA and Jurassic World. The numbers for this movie are just ridiculous. The 44% dropped from week to week helped in this regard. Now holds the record for second-week-grosser by the MCU, doing better than the original Avengers movies.

Black Panther (cont): Internationally this movie couldn’t be stopped either adding another $83M, to top the $700M mark. It is now in 10th place among MCU movies internationally, topping in Australia, Germany, West Africa (since when do we talk about West Africa B.O. returns?) that’s how crazy this has been.

Game Night: The latest Jason Bateman movie worked very well for counter programming on this weekend earning $17M for the R Rated vehicle. On a weekend of winner and losers, Warner Bros. should count themselves lucky. The director is even talking about the possibilities of sequels but let’s not get ahead of ourselves yet. When compared to other movies that fit these criteria (Horrible Bosses, Office Christmas Party or Bad Moms) is on the lower end of success.

Annihilation: When you have a Director coming up from the high of Ex Machina, a great actress in Natalie Portman this is not the kind of news you want to make. With a disappointing $11M, this movie faltered in many ways. While critics seemed to love it, the audiences didn’t connect with this movie at all, with a Cinemascore of C. With only Arrival as the only good news in this genre in the last few years it will be interesting to see how Sci-Fi can generate interest in the general public. Annihilation has a very tough road ahead since there really won’t be an international income. Netflix has those rights in just a few weeks. Paramount saw the writing on the wall and sold the rights to Netflix as they did with The Cloverfield Paradox.

Every Day: I had to look up the trailer for this movie, since I never heard of this movie before today. Didn’t even remember Orion pictures still made pictures. This is the kind of movie I expect in Netflix in a couple of weeks.
