Michael Shannon was snubbed hard by the Academy, et al. for The Shape of Water.

I saw it yesterday and thought it was a consummate, very comfy, seemingly perfect movie. But while Sally, Octavia, and Richard all pulled their weight to deliver performances worthy of their nominations, I simply couldn't help but think of how well Michael Shannon played Strickland.

His character is what I will now think of when a villain comes to mind. His is that of a person who only cares about one thing: his reputation, success. He scarcely gives his wife and children any mind and wants nothing more than to have "Fish-man" dead and to be seen as something more by General Hoyt. He does this by any means possible with little regard to anyone else other than himself. Shannon is very much aware of and in tune to this and plays the role with a sadistic and selfish tone that's near irresistible.

Why, then, was he not nominated for anything by the major governing bodies?
