Box Office Week: Black Panther keeps its domination in the BO entering as 10th movie of all time, Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow does so-so with $17M, and revengeful Willis does enough with Death Wish’s $13M.

Notable Box Office Stories:
Black Panther: At this point is very clear that Black Panther is only competing with itself as to how quickly it can go up the ranks of the Domestic Box Office. After this weekend, it enters the Top Ten movies of all time with $500M. Its third consecutive as the #1 movie, makes it the 3rd Marvel movie, Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to accomplish such feat. Also makes it the third fastest movie to the half a billion mark, tying with Jurassic World, both running behind Star Wars The Force Awakens. With a higher earnings in its third week than The Avengers ($55.6M) it will be interesting if it can pass it to become the highest Marvel earner in the next few weeks with only A Wrinkle in Time, Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim: Uprising as the next 3 weekend contenders.
Black Panther: (cont) Internationally it stands at $396M about to break the $900M total mark (maybe with adjusted numbers it already has). It now stands as #47 all-time worldwide movie. The biggest question mark left for this movie will be if the black cast can breakthrough in the Chinese market when it opens next weekend. If early numbers and other Asian countries is any indication, it will do very well.
Red Sparrow : Jennifer Lawrence breast were not enough to topple Black Panther, but it wasn’t in vain either, as it open along studio expectations with $17M, a number that quite frankly does not bode well for the overall earnings of this movie domestically. The most direct comparison for the Sparrow would be Atomic Blonde’s $18M. The good news comes from the international numbers where it out gross the USA with $26.5M. With the exception of the Hunger Games and the ensemble X-Men movies, JLaw doesn’t seem to bring enough butts to the theater. Joy, mother!, Passengers have all under performed with a mix bag in the critics department.
Death Wish: Bruce Willis/Eli Roth remake did as well as can be expected with $13M. On a budget of $30M seems to be on track to meet its budget but not much more. This type of movie is directed towards an older audience that just doesn’t go to the movie in masses. When comparing to other Dad’s on revenge streak, Jackie Chan’s The Foreigner, it matched almost dollar for dollar. Bruce Willis star is certainly not what it used to be, his last hit was G.I. Joe: Retaliation and that was 5 years ago, more of a The Rock vehicle than Willis’. Will be interesting to see how Glass will do next year.
