I think an interesting thing about Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds movie is that he was able to convey the horrific sound of the alien machines to a new generation that he himself probably feared in the original movie.

I admire his ability to create a distinct scary sound whenever the tripods/spaceships are seen. In the original movie the sound is sort of an otherworldly rattlesnake sound.
