Last Action Hero, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, was ahead of its time.
I recently re-watched Last Action Hero and was reminded how it's such a good satirical action comedy film. Then when I saw it the ratings for the film I was shocked to see some so low, I but do I think that it's a film that was ahead of its time with its satirical nature and poking holes in actions films. It's self aware, which is popular in film and TV now and I also think Charles Dance is great as the antagonist, Benedict. And not forgetting it was directed by John Mctiernan (Predator, Die Hard, Die Hard 3, Hunt for Red October).
I also think that it has a message about why we like action films, or films where the good guy wins, because when Jack Slater and the other characters from the film's make it to the real world he almost doesn't win. In his films, Slater is used to winning so easily. In the real world, as Charles Dance's Benedict says, that the bad guys can win now. So I think the film just illustrates further how we use film as an escapism from the real world.
It's not a masterpiece, but I do think it's a shame that it's not as well remembered as other Mctiernan's action film are, which almost all of are mentioned when it comes to great action films.
